In Mexico City, sisters Maria and Elena reunite after several years apart, only to find themselves competing for the affection of Rodolfo, a manipulative pimp. Elena, seeking an escape from her uneventful marriage to an elderly banker, falls into Rodolfo’s arms. Meanwhile, Maria, supported by a close-knit group of fellow sex workers, navigates the challenges posed by exploitative clients and her unscrupulous pimp. Matilde Landeta was one of the few women working behind the camera in Mexican cinema for many years. Her Trotacalles is a story of female solidarity in a world where women are either trophies or exploited. Although Landeta aimed for a realistic depiction, production requirements led the film to take on a more melodramatic tone.
