Renowned actress Paz Vega steps behind the camera for her directorial debut with Rita, a film about toxic masculinity and domestic violence, handled with intelligence and subtlety. Written by Vega herself, the film draws from her memories of 1980s Spain and serves as a love letter to her childhood and to that unique moment in Spanish history when a sense of freedom flourished following the long years of Franco’s dictatorship. Among these newfound freedoms, the law finally allows divorce. All of this is seen through the eyes of Rita, a charming yet mature child caught between her own youthful desires and the harsh reality of the violence she senses at home.
