Brigands: Chapter VII

Sun 06 Oct

Iosseliani’s brutal comic masterpiece received the Special Jury Prize at the 53rd Venice International Film Festival. There are a set of stories from a bloody medieval ruler, a petty thief who rises to the top of the communist party in Soviet-ruled Georgia, a down and out drunk in the Georgian civil war of the nineties to Georgian gun dealers in Paris.

We see the film being projected for a special audience with the reels out of order by a drunken projectionist. Flashing between different eras and with the use of the same actors throughout, the film philosophises about the proposition that not much has really changed.
