Set in a middle-class Kolkata household, House of Memories is one of Aparna Sen’s finest Bengali language films. A multi-layered family drama, the film centres on the close relationship of two women; Sanaka (acted by Aparna Sen) and her daughter-in-law, Paromita (one of Ritapurna Sen’s finest roles). When Paromita separates from her husband, the strong bond between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law breaks down due to social conventions. Told in flashback, Sen explores the contrasting emotional lives of different female generations with real warmth and insight, finding moments of female solidarity within a hostile society.

House of Memories won Best Feature film in Bengali at the National Film Awards in 2000
