A young passionate Frenchman (Romain Duris) on a mission to find a folk singer arrives in a Romanian village and gets entangled with the life of the local Romani characters and musicians. Although unable to speak a common language, their love of music allows them to communicate a deeper understanding.

Tony Gatlif was born in Algiers and is a French filmmaker of Romani descent. His films often focus on the Romani people of Europe and their music. He won the Best Director Award in the 2004 Cannes Film Festival. The Crazy Stranger was premiered at the Locarno Film Festival, winning the Silver Leopard for Best Movie.
