France, early nineties. As the violence rises between police and youth in the city projects, hip hop culture spreads as the best way to express revolt. Two boys, Joey Starr and Kool Shen, become the voice of a generation and one of the biggest French rap bands ever: Suprême NTM.

12:20pm – Lunch break

13:15pm – Interactive Music & Poetry Workshop

Join Michaël Vidon (Poet, Teacher and Performer) for an interactive journey to France to celebrate “La Fête de la Musique”. Every year, since the 1980s, French people “descendent dans la rue” and play music stages, in bars or on the sidewalk. “Le 21 Juin” is a celebration of music which is truly democratic as everyone is welcome to have a go…. just like in Michaël’s workshops!

Inspired by this celebration, Michaël will perform accessible poems, songs and raps in French and invite participants to create a song with him. Expect listening, collaborative writing, voting, singing and rapping… in French! It will take place in the Ciné Lumière with up to 224 students singing and rapping together.

This activity is suitable for students in late KS3 to KS5. The aims are for students to experience French language in a purposeful, creative and fun way with a focus on phonics.

Michaël Vidon is a French Teacher and spoken word educator. He runs the Multilingual Poetry Slam every year as part of the SKKF and works with schools and arts organisations to explore the overlaps between creativity and language learning while celebrating students’ diverse and unique voices.

2:25pm – End of the event
